Why the download holds every icon

A .ytd in a resource's stream/ folder replaces the stock dictionary of the same name as a whole. It does not patch one texture into it. A blips.ytd with only your icon in it would leave the other 320 blips of the game with nothing to draw. So the page writes the full dictionary: your pictures where you replaced something, and the stock icons everywhere else.

Where the stock icons come from

  • By default, from our own pictures of them. They are lossless decodes of the game's icons, so an uncompressed download keeps exactly the pixels the game draws. BC3 keeps the stock memory size and softens edges a little.
  • Or from your own copy. Drop a loose blips.ytd (unencrypted, uncompressed or Deflate) and every icon you did not touch is copied byte for byte.

We did not ship the game's raw icon data as a separate file: the pictures are already on the site, and a second copy of Rockstar's pixels would add 3 MB for the small gain of skipping one compression step.

The dictionaries

Blip icons live in three dictionaries: blips (321 icons), blips_mp (308) andblips_tu (1). Two icons are in both of the first two, and replacing one of those writes both files.

Not tried in RedM yet

The files follow the layout of the game's own dictionaries field by field and read back cleanly, but nobody at fivemad has loaded one in RedM yet. The README in the zip has the smallest test: one replaced blip and a command that puts it in front of you. The files are the HD sizes, the ones listed on this page: 586 icons at 64 x 64, the 41 mission area icons at 256 x 256 and one at 36 x 36. The game's standard copies are mostly half that (32 x 32 and 128 x 128). Which copy a streamed file replaces on the standard texture setting is not known yet.
