Interactive Map
Browse the RDR2 map in 2D or 3D, jump to a town or a lake, show the game's zone outlines and read the world position and zones under your cursor.
Diese Doku ist vorerst auf Englisch.
The Interactive Map is the RDR2 map drawn from the game’s own files, with the world position under your cursor, the game’s own zone outlines (states, districts, towns, water) and a place search. It is the same map every RedM map tool on the site draws on, so what you learn here works in the Coords Picker, Blip Placer and Door Finder too.
What it is for
Finding where something is before you script it. Look up a town, see which district and state a spot belongs to, read the x and y your script needs, or fly around in 3D to check the ground and the buildings. When you want to copy a position, open the Coords Picker.
Quick start
- Drag to pan, scroll or pinch to zoom, or use the + and - buttons in the top right corner.
- Type a name in Go to a place (for example
ValentineorFlat Iron Lake) and click a result. The map flies there. - Turn zone outlines on and off under Zones on the 2D map.
- Move the mouse over the map. The position shows in the bottom right corner of the map and in the Under the cursor panel, with every zone that covers that spot.
- Press Pick coordinates when you want to copy a point.
The map toolbar
The buttons in the top left corner of the map:
| Control | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| 2D / 3D | Flat map, or the same map laid over the game’s heightmap in 3D. | 2D |
| Mainland / Guarma | Which map to show. Guarma is its own map, far south of the mainland. Switching opens the other one on its own ground. | Mainland |
| Terrain / Paper | Terrain shows the relief. Paper is the look of the in-game pause map. | Terrain |
| Reference points | Pins on 11 known spots (the five banks, Annesburg, Strawberry, Tumbleweed, Van Horn, Colter, Sisika) so you can check the map lines up. 2D only. | off |
Switching style, or going to 3D and back, keeps the place you were looking at.
3D view
Press 3D to see the terrain in relief. If you were zoomed in on the 2D map, 3D opens over that spot; if you were looking at the whole map, it opens on the whole map. The ground in 3D shows the game’s own terrain colours, with lakes and rivers in the map’s water colour, whichever 2D style you picked.
- Drag to turn, right drag to move, wheel to zoom.
- Height x1.0 stretches the terrain up to four times, in steps of 0.5, which helps on flat ground.
- Buildings and trees fill in over the whole map in low detail first, and stay when you zoom out. Then the full detail buildings and trees keep loading from any distance, starting with what you look at, until your device has as much as it can hold; the full detail ground loads within a few kilometres and interiors close up. Full detail fades in over its low detail. Nothing is dropped when you zoom out, and nothing on screen is taken away for something else.
- While the camera is still nothing switches off; newly loaded detail only fades in. What is drawn is chosen again when you move. How much full detail is drawn at once depends on your device, so the view stays smooth: a strong graphics card shows more of it from far away.
- Buildings: Interiors / Trees chooses whether full detail interiors and trees load. Both are on. Turn one off if 3D feels slow; the low detail trees stay.
- While something loads, the corner says what and how many are still to come.
The zone outlines, the place search and the reference points are 2D only.
Go to a place
The list holds the 24 towns, 35 water bodies (lakes, rivers, creeks, ponds, a swamp and an ocean) and the 5 bank locations plus Colter, 65 entries in all, sorted into Place, Town and Water. Search matches any part of the name. Clicking a town or place zooms in close; clicking water stops further out, because lakes and rivers are large. The Guarma entries (Manicato, the three Aguasdulces places, Bahia de la Paz and Arroyo de la Vibora) switch the map to Guarma first, and a mainland entry switches it back.
Zones on the 2D map
| Layer | What it draws | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Towns | Town outlines with their names. | on |
| Districts | Districts (The Heartlands, Big Valley, Bayou Nwa…), dashed. | off |
| States | States (New Hanover, Lemoyne, New Austin…), thicker red line. | off |
| Water | Lakes, rivers, creeks, ponds, the swamp and the ocean. | off |
Town names are always labelled. District, state and water names appear once you zoom in a little.
These are the game’s own zones from mapzones.meta: 9 states, 19 districts, 24 towns and 35 water bodies. They are the polygons the game’s zone natives answer from, so a point inside the Valentine outline on this map is a point the game calls Valentine.
Under the cursor
The panel shows the cursor’s x and y (one decimal), the z when the height under it is known, and every zone that covers the spot with its type (state, district, town, lake, river…). Outside every zone it says so.
The numbers are world metres, the same x and y RedM scripts use. The small readout in the map corner rounds to whole metres.
Tips
- Want the zone hash for a script check, or a z you can paste? Use the Coords Picker: it shows the same zones with their hashes and the Lua to test them.
- Turn on States and Districts together to see how the game nests them: every district sits inside a state.
- Use Paper when you want to compare with what players see on their pause map.
Limitations
- The z in the cursor readout is the top of an 8 m height cell, which includes roofs and tree tops. It is a guide, not a spawn height.
- In 3D, buildings and trees only appear where they are available for that area, and they load in as you move.
- The low detail is plain coloured buildings, larger structures and simple tree shapes. Small props only show in full detail, close up.
